Croteam Incubator is now officially a thing!

The Croteam Incubator is an internal division of Croteam formed in 2015, with an initiative to provide Croatian developers with opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t be available while focusing on Croteam’s studio values – creating great games and enjoying what makes game development fun.

“This year, Croteam is celebrating its 25-year anniversary. Starting up in this business wasn’t an easy ride. We went through it all, but we were also very lucky,” remembers Roman Ribaric, Croteam’s CEO and President of Croteam Incubator. “Croteam started in the proverbial garage, went through tough times and experienced a lot of difficulties before we got to where we are today. Now we’re in a position to help out and that’s exactly what Croteam Incubator is about.”

A lot of things weren’t available to new game dev studios in the past, like engine technology, grants, loans and private funding, which all are now more accessible to everyone willing to start in game development. At the same time, a lot of startup development studios are still struggling to get their projects off the ground.

SCUM and I Hate Running Backwards are Ready to Blow Your Mind at PAX East!

A wise man once said that nothing feels as good as playing a great game and while this might be completely made up we’re pretty sure not many things come close. That’s exactly the reason we decided to jump over The Pond once more and visit the great city of Boston for PAX East where we will be joined by two amazing teams – Gamepires and Binx Interactive – who are going to showcase their amazing projects.

You have undoubtedly heard about Gamepires. For the past two years, Gamepires have been working on developing the ultimate open-world survival game that will evolve the genre with its unprecedented levels of character customization and progress. That game is, of course, SCUM. The game has been talked about a lot, but it has never been showcased publicly, and that’s exactly why you should book your PAX East tickets right now.

SCUM will be available to play at the amazing custom made booth made in collaboration between Gamepires and Devolver Digital, so be sure to look for it on the show floor and give it a try. We know you’ll love it. Also, if you’re one of those cool content creator folk, be sure to drop a line to tinsley[at]tinsley-pr[dot]com to arrange an appointment and get a chance to chat to the developers.

Along with SCUM, PAX East will be enriched by the presence of Binx Interactive, a five-man part of the Croteam Incubator, who will be showcasing their “shoot-em-down” game I Hate Running Backwards. This gem of a game was last shown at Gamescom 2017 and Reboot InfoGamer 2017 but has evolved beyond expectation. That makes it a perfect fit for PAX East where you will be able to get hands-on and even play with some of the developers.

See you at Reboot Develop in Dubrovnik?

Not Davor Hunski.

Megalomaniac event managers of Reboot Develop have just updated the seemingly ever-growing list of this year’s speakers. The rest of the line up will be revealed as the conference nears, bringing the total number of speakers to “more than 110” industry veterans (in 7 tracks).

Currently there are “only” 34 speakers listed, but it’s hard not to be impressed just by glancing at the list. It’s also a great honor to see two of our very own devs in company of these games industry celebrities.

Davor Hunski, Croteam’s Chief Creative Officer and Grandfather of Croatian gaming industry will be joined by Admir Elezović, studio’s co-founder and Art Director for a talk on their current project. Which may or may not be Serious Sam 4. They aren’t saying (yet).

Regardless, Reboot Develop is shaping up as the most unique, premier and high-end games industry event in Europe and there are plenty of reasons to attend the conference taking place in historical seaside city of Dubrovnik, aka “real world King’s Landing”. The conference will be taking place from 19th to 21st of April 2018.

Croteam Spotlight Q&A – Meet Nikola Radovic, the artist extraordinaire!

Hey, everyone!

We’re super busy and have so many exciting news to share! Croteam VR teams are wrapping up several new projects, and the Croteam Incubator is now officially a thing, where in just one short year we’ve helped three regional indie teams build their games and show them for the first time at Gamescom. More are coming, and it’s an incredible experience to be able to shape, playtest and hopefully release all the crazy ideas that we wouldn’t have time to do by ourselves. With Croteam VR and Croteam Incubator projects in place, Croteam’s core team was able to remain focused on a single project, Serious Sam 4.

We’ll talk more about all of those projects soon, but if you’re feeling impatient (we certainly are!) take a peek behind the curtain. In this new blog series we will feature members of our team and the projects they are working on, all the while offering you a small glimpse into their day-to-day activities here at Croteam. This will also give you a chance to get a first look at the things we are preparing for you. There will be exclusives, of course, so stay tuned for a new dose of Croteam every week.

The honor of introducing this blog series to the public fell down on the shoulders of Nikola Radović. An animator and concept artist extraordinaire who is responsible for both designing and animating some of the enemies you will be fighting against in the much anticipated Serious Sam 4. Nikola is a crucial part of Croteam’s art & animation department and has done some great work for our VR projects, both released and unreleased. So, without further ado – here’s Nikola.

Nikola Radović has been a crucial part of Croteam’s art and animation department. Here he is, enjoying a chilled piece of watermelon. Because why not!

Hey, Nikola. I hope you realize the importance and honor that we have shown to you by choosing you as the first ever person in Croteam’s developer spotlight series. You will forever go down in history for that. We’ll continue the discussion about my compensation later, but for now, let’s get to the point. How long have you been a part of Croteam, and what are some of your day-to-day activities?

Hey, Mr. random totally not weird interviewer. I absolutely realize it’s an immense honor, and feel the pressure accordingly.

I’ve been a part of Croteam for almost three years now. My work day usually starts with a quick check up of all things I’ve done and still need to do, and I spend the rest of the day trying to stick to the gameplan as much as I can. I usually start light with some sketching, to get that creative “juju” on, and then I jump to character animation where all the magic happens. Finally, before I call it a day I usually get some planning done for tomorrow. Fun, eh?

Have you been a part of the gaming industry throughout your professional career? How did you start, and what are some of the things you worked on before joining Croteam?

No, I haven’t. Although I wish I was because you really learn quickly in this industry. Plus, it’s a well-known fact that game developers are an insanely popular bunch, and being popular is what we all crave for, right? All jokes aside, working in the gaming industry is a pretty unique experience, and I’m very pleased I was given this opportunity.

My foundations are in classical painting, illustration, and 2D animation, so naturally, I started as an animator and worked on a couple of short animated movies prior to working in Croteam.

SSVR: TLH – Get ready to get Serious; The Skills and Power-Ups update is LIVE!

Hello friends and VR lovers. After Arcadia that pushed Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope to the verge of being finished, it’s finally time for Croteam VR to show you the great Skills and Power-Ups system that we have been working on since day one.

For the first time in series history Sam is not limited by his weapon handling skills and is able to annihilate even bigger alien armies thanks to the all new Skills and Power-Ups update.

With this update general Stone gains access to a skill tree that allows him to unlock passive and active abilities which players can buy alongside weapons and ammo in the shop. Skill points are unlocked by completing planets. Higher difficulty levels bring even more points that players can use to set up their skill inventory to better match their play style.

Lay waste on your enemies with tactical orbital lasers and plasma cannons, slow down time, create holographic decoys, release swarms of flying quadcopters, unleash an army of spiders, place minigun turret defenses or simply create giant explosions!

The Skills and Power-Ups update includes options to improve and upgrade weapons by finishing perfect runs. Players can gain one weapon upgrade per difficulty per planet, and unlock even more by playing future content that is yet to come.

What are you waiting for? Jump in and play!

Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope – Arcadia Update is available NOW on Steam Early Access!

As was promised a couple of weeks back, the new Arcadia planet is available NOW for all Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope owners on Steam. This new update brings us another step closer to our ultimate goal, which is the full release of the game on Steam.

With the Arcadia Update landing on Early Access, SSVR: The Last Hope continues its journey towards full release on Steam. This time Sam “Serious” Stone will visit Arcadia Minor, and its four different locations – Sea Breeze, Meadow of Death, The Lost Valley and The Final Breath – equal parts green and lush as they are gray and desolate.

As is tradition, Sam has got some new toys like the devastating cannon that will help him annihilate all comers. On Arcadia Minor Sam will face four new enemies, and a huge Earth Giant boss which looks to crush all that stand before him. Do you have what it takes to stop this colossal beast?

Along with the aforementioned fresh new content, the Arcadia Update offers the usual amount of adjustments, tweaks and improvements, all based on community feedback. The most important one is the reworked save system which now allows you to continue a wave where you left-off in a previous session. That means you no longer need to go through a planet in a single sitting. Hooray!

E3 2017, here we come!

As you might have guessed, Croteam will be attending this year’s E3. As always, we’ll be there with style, as demonstrated in the photo on the left. Since we are very proud of all that we were able to accomplish in  VR, this year we’ll be focusing on our upcoming VR projects, namely Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope and The Talos Principle VR.

The Last Hope has been Croteam VR core project for a while now, and soon it will be available as a full release. The latest update, Arcadia Minor is due to be released this week (more details to come). We are very excited to show all of the progress we made recently.

As for The Talos Principle VR, this will be the first time an “outsider” gets to see the game we have been working on tirelessly for months now. We will be showing Talos in all the VR glory behind closed doors, so stay tuned for more info on the game during the show.

Care for a chat or a play through? Pay us a visit at Devolver’s Anti-Booth located at the lot across the LA Convention Center.

We don’t always open our door to journos, but when we do…

… it’s turns out to be fun!

The good folks over from ASUS Republic of Gamers came to visit us a couple of weeks back. Kimberly and Jason had a chance to try out all our current VR projects and were completely blown away by the immersive and intense experiences they offer. Soon after that they started chatting to a few of our own, including our Alen Ladavac, Ante Vrdelja, Damjan Mravunac, Dean Sekulić and Nikola Mosettig, which let them find out first hand why we love VR and why we are willing to dwell in this alternate world.

If you want to know yourself, have a look at their freshly released article “Inside Croteam, the game studio going all-in on Virtual Reality“. Enjoy!
